Digital x-ray systems are a very recent and important technological development. The benefits to the patient are that a much lower dose of radiation (up to 80% less) is required to produce the final image and that the image can be displayed immediately allowing a more accurate and efficient diagnosis and treatment. These images can be enhanced, sharpened and coloured to further improve diagnostic value.

These images do not require processing chemicals, the developer and fixer, and therefore can be considered kinder to the environment.

The resultant radiographs (x-ray images) can be transmitted to other dental surgeons, insurance companies and specialists via the internet.
