Crowns are a complete covering over the tooth. They are used when a tooth may be severely damaged, discoloured or in an incorrect position. Many types of crown exist, porcelain, high strength porcelain, porcelain bonded to metal, ProceraŽ and Empress cast ceramic crowns. There are advantages and reasons why we select a particular type for a particular situation. The tooth is prepared, an impression recorded of the preparation, and a temporary crown placed onto the tooth while the crown is fabricated in the dental laboratory (normally two weeks). A detailed shade assessment is undertaken and this information applied to the new crown so the new crown appears extremely natural. On the final placement visit, the temporary crown is removed and the new crown is placed with a specialised bonding material. Using cast dental posts, the teeth may be significantly repositioned.
